How many times can you ask about osteogenesis imperfecta? This makes World a course-specific unfriendly Qbank. Unfortunately, USMLE World really harps on specific topics. The vignettes are more Step 1, and the explanations are far superior (with pictures). UWorld has fewer questions than Kaplan, but the interface is nearly identical to the actual Step 1 software. Take advantage of the group rate by purchasing it in bulk, even if you won’t use it until the very end of your Board Prep. Please note that you can buy it in September, then save it until April, when you “activate” it. This is not a good study resource, but is great for finding out where you stand in terms of your test preparedness. However, you can google websites that provide student-written explanations of the answers (some free and some at an extra cost). You are NOT given explanations for the questions you have gotten wrong. You get a 3-digit score and a breakdown of where your strengths and weaknesses are and you are told what questions you got wrong. However, these have questions that are as close to the real thing as you are going to get.

They do NOT use the current software you will use on test day, and they include only 4 blocks of questions (NBME has 4 blocks of 50 questions and Step 1 will have 7 blocks of 40 questions). The NBME has 6 practice exams, each 200 questions, each $60 available on their website. – Overall: This is, by far, the most used and recommended book for Step 1 Review – Cons: Black and White Only, Requires supplementation for complete Board Preparation – Pros: Only the Highest Yield Information, Space to take your own notes Without your additions, it is essentially useless for Tulane coursework. This means it should not be your only resource, but can definitely be the primary resource for studying for the Boards. The only trouble with this book is that the information is “in code.” A simple word under a heading could become an entire question on the shelf.
It is strongly recommended that, starting as early as possible, you begin taking notes inside the book so you can review it later when studying for Boards. The newer versions are much larger (more pages) but include more free white space for you to take notes in. You absolutely must get the most updated version, which occurs annually around January. This is the highest recommended book of any review material for the boards.
